Grayson
Many thousands of years before the first European settlers set foot here, Grayson was inhabited by the Lower Creek and Cherokee Indians. The Indians primarily used the land for hunting and villages. The history of Grayson is evidenced by the names of schools, roads, buildings and churches. Grayson grew quickly and attracted merchants, a railway, settlers, educators and religious leaders.
"Trip" Academy was the first school in Grayson. Prior to 1881, the only education provided for the children of Grayson area was in a log cabin near the south edge of Chestnut Grove Cemetery. Soon after 1900, a two-story frame structure was erected on the same lot where Grayson Elementary School now stands. The lot for Grayson School was given by Mr. Moses McConnell,"for so long as the land is used for school purposes."
Grayson has become a thriving area with a small-town feel and big-city access. Located in South Gwinnett County, Grayson is an easy 25 mile commute to Atlanta via Highways 316, 78 and 20. Community activities in the Grayson area can easily be found. Several parks are located close by. The city hosts two main festivals: Grayson Day in the spring - Modeled after Snellville Days in nearby Snellville, Grayson Day, held annually on a Saturday at the end of April, features a parade down Main Street, food vendors, crafts, and live music. The city and local businesses sponsor the event, which takes place mostly in the centrally located Grayson City Park. The football team, marching band, and cheerleaders from Grayson High School, as well as other local organizations, politicians, and groups make the parade a favorite tradition among residents. Bay Creek Park This 153-acre park features Gwinnett County's first special-needs ballfield and playground named "Unity Place." Both the ball field and playground are accessible to wheelchairs and walkers. A second playground, and seven baseball/softball fields and a football field with a lighted walking track rounds out this spectactular park. Tribble Mill Park This 700-acre park with two lakes, fishing, trails for walking, jogging, mountain biking and horseback riding are available. There are several pavillions, and an open rental space for large festivals and a new large playground.
